This Workshop will seek to develop a coherent set of detector requirements to suggest appropriate directions for the development of the technologies required in the near, medium and longer term for low energy science (THz to Soft X-rays).

International Workshop on Infrared Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Accelerator Based Sources (WIRMS 2005). The scope of this workshop is to bring together SR & FEL scientists and synchrotron-IR & FEL-IR users to discuss the trends in these fields, and to promote even more promising applications.

Researchers at the University of Florida have built a world-record high frequency chip using a common type of semiconductor, an advance that could lead to inexpensive terahertz systems for detecting hidden weapons, and chemical and biological agents.

Clark’s team uses backscatter radiography and Terahertz imaging to evaluate the integrity of the shuttle’s spray-on foam insulation in a non-destructive manner. Instead of cutting apart materials for study, Clark’s team uses the techniques to simply look inside, through the wall of foam — probing for internal anomalies without raising blade or blowtorch.

The vacuum tube amplifier– possibly in a nanoscale version– may be the best means of exploiting terahertz spectra, said Stanford University Professor Thomas Lee. With MEMS technology, it becomes possible to bond tube-like structures right onto a semiconductor substrate. Thus, the future terahertz transmitter becomes a nanoscale klystron radiator.
