33rd International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves
and
16th International Conference on THz Electronics
“Terahertz for Life”

The International Conference on Infrared and Millimeter Waves/THz Electronics (IRMMW-THz), currently in its 31st year, is the oldest and largest continuous forum specifically devoted to the field of ultra high frequency electronics and applications. The IRMMW conference and it’s long standing accompanying monthly publication, International Journal of Infrared and Millimeter Waves, were among the very first scientific outlets for the burgeoning field of far infrared components and instruments that arose in the mid 1970s. The scope of the conference extends from millimeter wave devices, components and systems to far-infrared detectors and instruments, and encompasses micro- and nano-scale structures to large-scale accelerators and Tokomaks and their applications. The international organizing committee is composed of world-recognized experts from fifteen countries. The conference typically alternates between Europe, Asia and the US on a three year cycle. Past conferences have been supported by US agencies such as IEEE, APS, DOE and DoD and dozens of local societies within the hosting countries. In 2003 both the IRMMW and THz Electronics conferences were held sequentially in Japan. Total attendees for both events was 520 registrants from 18 countries with 340 submitted papers. After 2003 the two conferences joined and attendance in 2004 (Karlsruhe, Germany) exceeded 450 scientists from 28 countries with over 400 contributed papers. The 2005 conference in Williamsburg, Virginia, hosted 300 scientists from 23 countries with more than 375 contributed papers. After traveling to Shanghai, China in 2006 and Cardiff, Wales, UK, in 2007, the conference will be held at the campus of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, USA, between September 15th-19th, 2008.

Over the past four years the organizing committee has significantly expanded the conference scope and the participating research communities. There is now a special focus on terahertz techniques and applications, including both the traditional radio frequency domain, and the new fast pulse time domain approaches to generating, detecting and using high frequency energy. The conference offers the attendee a chance to hear and participate in a wide range of topic areas that span all aspects of Infrared, Terahertz and Millimeter-Wave (IR, THz, and MMW) technology and applications from quantum physics, chemistry, and biology to radio astronomy and plasma physics.

Sandwiched between the optical on the short wavelength side and radio on the long wavelength extreme, the Terahertz or Far-Infrared has long been considered the last remaining scientific gap in the electromagnetic spectrum. Due to the historic role the IRMMW conference has played in bridging this gap by bringing together international researchers in many diverse fields - from space science to nuclear fusion - and recently chemistry, biology and security, the 2008 organizing committee would again like to reach out to scientists in adjacent fields who can benefit from recent developments in the far-IR.

In the last few years interest in terahertz imaging and spectroscopy from the biology, ultra-fast chemistry and health science communities has grown exponentially as new instrumentation and techniques have begun to make their way into many laboratories world-wide. This is especially the case in Europe and Japan, both of which have thriving cross-disciplinary programs supporting new applications in this frequency domain.

As a long standing member of the space science community and a recent cross-over to the biological sciences, the conference chair directly reflects this goal of the 2008 International Organizing Committee: to reach out to communities in the life sciences and bring attention to the very unique techniques and applications that might cross-over into these fields. Consequently Sponsorship for the 2008 conference is being solicited, for the first time, from the US National Institutes of Health, NASA/JPL and both the divisions of Engineering and Biology at Caltech. We are looking forward to a very well attended and internationally supported cross-disciplinary conference venue that will set IRMMW up as THE conference for information exchange in the “Terahertz Gap.”

Introduction

The terahertz (THz) region of the electromagnetic spectrum spans the frequency range between the mid infra-red and the millimetre/microwave (100 GHz - 30 THz). This region has a number of exciting properties: non-ionising, opaque materials can appear transparent, many substances have a readily identifiable frequency “footprint” and so a wide range of inspection solutions are available.

However, this region of the spectrum has yet to be properly exploited owing to the severely limited number of sources and detectors available leading to considerable academic interest in the production of radiation sources which emit in the THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Over the last ten years, terahertz science has advanced considerably with both optical-bench-based systems and solid state THz lasers (quantum cascade lasers) now routinely available. These advances are now leading to the uptake by early adopters and market sectors are starting to appear.

Who Should Attend

This conference has been designed to bring together the academic and the industrial players in this sector. Anyone interested in the potential of THz radiation, whether researcher or industrialist, current user, potential user or just curious will find this a useful and stimulating conference.

In addition to the presentations there will be a mini exhibition and poster session to stimulate the contact and networking between academia and industry.

Please Join us for the beginning of our second decade of the Annual Southeast Ultrafast Conference (SEUFC). This is our 11th continuous year of the conference. The Southeast continues to grow adding new research groups every year who are using ultrafast lasers in their research. Our conference offers the significant opportunity for our community, to communicate and share new ideas, it and has resulted in cross campus and inter-university collaborations, both formal and informal and has also been a bridge between academia and the commercial world. It has been Coherent’s pleasure and privilege to be the sponsor of the Southeast Ultrafast Conference for the past 10 years. Please join us for SEUFC 08.

For those that may be unaware of our history, the first conference was held in January of 1998 in a dormitory basement on the Vanderbilt University campus, in Nashville, Tennessee. Since then we have had ten great gatherings with friends and colleagues from research groups throughout the US and Canada and with special invited speakers from across North America . Each year we are privileged to have one of the areas top universities support and sponsor our meeting. I am so pleased to be able to announce that, this our eleventh year, we highlight and visit the University of Arkansas and are being sponsored by Greg Salamo and the Physics department.

This past year we met at the Vanderbilt University for our tenth and historic meeting, and in previous years we have been hosted by the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Florida, University of Central Florida, Tulane University, and the University of Alabama, Huntsville to name but some of the sites.

The 11th Annual Southeast Ultrafast Conference (SEUFC) will be held during the 2nd week in January. This years two day meeting will be held on Thursday, January 10th , and Friday, January 11th , 2008 in Fayetteville , Arkansas on the campus of the University of Arkansas. In the next few weeks we will be adding information almost daily to our conference web site, with program information, speaker information, hotel information, and a detailed FAQ and our conference program. We invite you to register for the conference today. Please follow the link for REGISTRATION.

This year we are opening our conference to even more groups and universities as we invite groups from Texas, and through out the Mid-West.
Scope of the Workshop

WIRMS2007 will be the 4th WIRMS meeting and follows the highly successful workshops at Porquerolles in 2001, Lake Tahoe in 2003 and Rathen in 2005. The scope of the workshop is to bring together SR & FEL scientists and synchrotron-IR & FEL-IR users to discuss the latest developments and trends as well as the future directions of the fields, and to promote even more promising applications. Another important mission of this workshop is for the active experts to provide young researchers and graduate students with a good introduction to this rapidly advancing field.

Topics

    * Infrared spectroscopy - from solid state to biological substances and gas phase.
* IR & THz spectroscopy under extreme conditions such as high pressures and high magnetic fields.
* IR microspectroscopy and imaging.
* Near field microscopy, spectroscopy and imaging.
* Time-resolved spectroscopy.
* Coherent synchrotron radiation as a powerful IR source.
* Advances in IR & THz radiation based on accelerators.
* Other new developments on FEL’s and synchrotrons relevant for the IR and THz regions.
