Women in Photonics (WiP) School on Photonic Metamaterials

Paris, April 14-18, 2008
The school targets young scientists (McS, PhD, Post-Doc and early stage researchers - BOTH MALE AND FEMALE), and aims to familiarize them with the basic concepts and the recent developments in the area of electromagnetic wave propagation in novel composite materials.
Main photonic materials categories that will be discussed are
* photonic crystals
* metamaterials (from microwaves to optics)
* nanostructured materials (with emphasis on plasmonics and semiconductor optics)
Courses will range from presentations of the main principles governing the wave propagation in the above types of media to more advanced topics covering the latest developments and the perspectives of the area of photonic metamaterials.
The school is organized in the framework of the gender activities of the Networks of Excellence Metamorphose and Phoremost, and the lectures will be given by mainly female scientists, both established and young, working in the area of photonic metmatamaterials. With this selection of instructors, the school aims: (a) to make a real action towards promotion of women in photonics and show the important role that women can play in this area, (b) to create role models for the young female researchers and students and (c) to familiarize with the picture of woman scientist.
The school is organized and sponsored by the EU Networks of Excellence
