Research Officer, Terahertz Plasmonics, U. Bath
A postdoctoral position in the field of metamaterials at terahertz frequencies under the supervision of Steve Andrews and Stefan Maier is available immediately. The project entails the development of a new generation of THz near-field optical components using plasmonic radiation-guiding structures such as our recently described planar metamaterials (APL 88, 251120, 2006) and metawires (PRL 97, 176805, 2006). Metawires are periodically corrugated metallic wires and tapers, exhibiting spoof surface plasmon polaritons which could allow the superfocusing of THz radiation into deep sub-wavelength volumes.
The intention is to explore potential applications in high dynamic range near field THz microscopy, spectroscopy and biosensing. You will have the opportunity to work with an existing state-of-the-art, fiber coupled THz time-domain spectroscopy system and to adapt it for near field probing. Although most of the project will entail experimental work, including using a micro-fabrication facility in the department ( www.bath.ac.uk/physics/cleanroom/ ), there will also be the opportunity to become involved in the computer modelling side of the program and to interact with our theoretical collaborators in Madrid and Zaragoza.
You will have a PhD in physics or electrical engineering, experience of time domain terahertz techniques and preferably knowledge of one or more the following: plasmonics, photonics, micro-fabrication and electromagnetic modelling. Information about the department can be found at www.bath.ac.uk/physics/ .
Salary: Salary up to £28,290 per annum
