Postdoctoral Research Associate and PhD Studentship in Terahertz Photonics: University of Leeds
The School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Leeds has a long-standing international reputation for research and innovation in electronics and photonics across the microwave and terahertz (THz) frequency ranges. Within our new 160 m2 laboratory for THz frequency photonics, we have five femtosecond laser systems for broadband terahertz generation and detection, together with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, this laboratory is supported by a new III-V MBE growth system and extensive semiconductor processing facilities. A new collaboration (PORTRAIT) has recently been established between UCL, Bath, Essex and Leeds and the Centre for Integrated Photonics (CIP), to design, fabricate and characterize components for THz frequency operation. This work will build upon the optoelectronic technologies developed for optical communications systems, providing high reliability components capable of low power and efficient room temperature operation.
We seek to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) at Leeds to work on this programme, and to investigate and determine the underlying material properties of these new components on femtosecond timescales; understand and optimize the mechanisms leading to THz generation and detection, and use the resulting THz systems in a range of challenging imaging and spectroscopy applications. The position is for up to 36 months and is available immediately. You will have a PhD in physics, electronic engineering, or a related discipline, and will have experience in most or all of the following: telecommunication optoelectronic devices; ultrafast pulsed laser systems; optical system design; femtosecond dynamics of condensed matter systems. You will have the ability to work as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment and liaise with University collaborators. An appropriate track record of publications is desirable. This position represents an outstanding opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated researcher.

A PhD studentship may also be available to work on this programme. You must be an EU citizen and have a good first degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, electronic engineering, or a related discipline. For the PhD position, interested applicants should contact Ms Barber address below. There is no closing date, the position will be filled as an appropriate candidate presents him or herself.
